I Didn’t Start Out Knowing What I Was Doing

I started out totally raw. I really didn’t have a clue what I was doing. I was mostly trying to copy what other golfers were doing and hoping something would click.

The problem was, I wasn’t hitting the ball very far—and I rarely hit it straight. I topped a lot of shots, struggled with both my driver and irons, and sometimes felt like I was slowing everybody else down.

My sons gave me tips when we played together. My youngest son gave me one piece of advice I’ll never forget:

“Keep your head down. Keep your head down. Keep your effing head down!”

We went to the range together and kept working on my swing. I also tried a couple of indoor golf simulators, where I could practice by myself without worrying about holding anybody up.

Little by little, things started getting better.

Then I found the group I play with today. That’s when things really began to change. I got good, practical feedback about what I was doing wrong and—more importantly—what I could do differently.

Over time, I began focusing on a handful of simple things I could actually remember when I stood over the ball.

Those simple reminders became what I now call The 5-Point Consistency Method.

The 5-Point Consistency Method

Imagine Enjoying Golf More

  • Step up to the ball with a simple plan instead of a head full of swing thoughts.

  • Build a repeatable routine you can use from shot to shot.

  • Give yourself a better chance to make solid contact more often.

  • Spend less time wondering what you did wrong after every swing.

  • Focus on a few simple reminders—and get back to enjoying the game.

Picture yourself walking to your next shot knowing exactly what you want to focus on. Not ten different swing thoughts. Not the latest tip you watched online. Just a simple routine you can remember and use.

Why Simple Can Work Better

Golf gives you plenty to think about already. Your grip. Your stance. Your club. The wind. The distance. The hazard you’re trying not to hit.

Add five or ten swing thoughts on top of all that, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

That’s why the 5-Point Consistency Method keeps things simple.

Instead of trying to rebuild your entire swing, you’ll focus on a few basic reminders you can actually remember:

Slow yourself down. Get lined up. Stay with the shot. Keep your head down. Focus on making good contact.

You don’t have to remember everything you’ve ever heard about golf.

You just need a simple place to start.
